The 2009 recipient of the Gulen F. Tangoren, M.D. Award for Vocal Excellence in Opera, soprano Beth Stewart has been praised by the Baltimore Sun for a “"tonal sheen that carries her expressive phrasing”" and a “"bright, agile voice”" that is “"intoxicating…... delivered with considerable flair”." (Baltimore Sun) Ms. Stewart recently debuted with the Newark Symphony Orchestra as the featured soloist in "From Italy to the New World with Love", a program featuring arias by Mozart, Bellini, Verdi, and Puccini. In April 2011, she intrduced her new concert "Around the World in 80 Days: A Journey through the Many Lands of Italian Opera" at Har Sinai Congregation under the generous support of the Peggy and Yale Gordon Trust. Ms. Stewart has performed with the Bethesda Summer Music Festival as Lucia di Lammermoor; Peabody Opera Theatre as Violetta in La Traviata, Micäela in Carmen, and Giulietta in Les Contes d'Hoffman; with Maryland Opera Society as The Merry Widow; and with Maryland Concert Opera as Second Lady in Die Zauberflöte. In December 2007, Ms. Stewart performed “O mio babbino caro” as cover for Anna Netrebko in the Kennedy Center Honors rehearsals. Concert engagements have included soprano soloist in Bach'’s Mass in B-minor and “Hallelujah Handel!” with Concert Artists of Baltimore, and in “Music of the British Isles” with the Master Chorale of Washington and members of the National Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Stewart was the featured performer at the 2008 Concert Artists of Baltimore Annual Gala, delighting guests with her Gershwin interpretations, and performed Mozart’'s Exsultate jubilate with chamber orchestra as part of the 150th Anniversary Celebration of the Church of Saint Ann in Hampton, New Jersey. Her popular concert programming includes "Secret Loves of Song and Stage”", a program of art song and operatic repertoire which explores the bittersweet joys of hidden love, and "Sounds of Spain", a program that examines the influence of Spanish sounds and rhythms in a variety of Western musical works. Ms. Stewart thrilled audiences in a series of holiday concerts last winter, culminating in an incandescent “O Holy Night” at the Catholic Charities’ Christmas Festival at the Basilica.

What's Happening

Chesapeake Chamber Opera

I've just taken a huge leap, relocating from Baltimore, my adopted hometown of the past decade, to the sunny mountains of Tucson, Arizona. I miss "Bawlmer", but I am loving the warm, relaxed vibe here.While my main focus continues to be performing and following my passion for arts administration, I am looking forward to having lots of time to explore the arts scene in the Southwest, bend myself into challenging new yoga positions, and play Pitch (the family card game) with my fabulous parents.

When not singing myself, I've spent the past two years working my tail off as General Director of the Baltimore-based Chesapeake Chamber Opera. I'm tremendously proud of the work we've done to present engaging and intimate shows that feature exceptional young artists in leading roles. We also aim to involve the community by keeping our admission prices ridiculously low--you can check out top-quality talent for only 20 bucks! We will not be producting mainstage shows for the 2011-2012 season but we will be putting on small concerts and lecture-recitals around the country. Contact me for more info!
